> Man gets put in prison because people are mean.
> Man gets a bunch of treasure thanks to his friend and then goes and gets lots of revenge on the people who were mean.

The book was good, I'm glad I read an abridged version though. There's this [diagram on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Count_of_Monte_Cristo) that shows how complex all the _actual_ relationships between all the characters are.

I think the beginning was much more exciting, when he's in prison and then finds the treasure. I found the second half a little more tedious because it was a lot more political and there were a lot of names to remember and I made the mistake of having a break for about 10 days which meant all the context in my head was gone.

The ending was good, it did feel a little contrived but I would expect it's explained a bit more thoroughly in an unabridged version.
